Though the April eruption of volcano Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland was considered relatively small, it caused inconvenient disruption to air travel across western and northern Europe ‒ right when I was scheduled to fly to Portugal. Our trip had to be postponed to October.
Five hours after landing in Lisbon, a small group of Portuguese men and pastors gathered with me to strategize reaching men. This three-hour planning session was interspersed with testimonies describing experiences and observations of why men don’t go to church and effective methods to reach them.
The next day, ABWE Missionary Phil Schlener drove me to a retreat where I spoke to the men about who they are in Christ (men of valor!) and why fighting for the Gospel side by side is God’s plan. The next day I spoke at ABWE Missionary Bob Fry’s church, Igreja Bíblica Baptista de Santa Marta, and at Phil’s church, Igreja Evangelica Baptista ‒ both in Lisbon.
